How to copy & paste Apple Podcasts Transcript

Quick Hacks

I wanted to copy & paste a transcript from the Apple Podcasts App but it won’t let me.

Whenever I try, it just copies the first couple of paragraphs and a note about copyright protection. Because I don’t have a lot of time but get recommended a lot of great podcasts, I wanted to put the transcript content into ChatGPT so summarize the content to get a quick overview of what the podcast is about and the learnings thereof (the podcast descriptions often are merely teasers without giving away too much).

There is a workaround! This only works in the Podcasts Desktop App, though. The transcripts are not shown in the web player.

  • Open Podcast App on Desktop
  • Open the full Transcript
  • Highlight the entire transcript text (command + A does not work here, you need to use your mouse or trackpad to mark the first word and drag it down to the last word manually)
  • Right Click the highlighted text
  • Choose Services > Open
  • A popup will open with the following message: Confirm Service. Podcasts wants to use the restricted Service “Open”.
  • Confirm by clicking “Run Service”
  • A text file will open with the entire transcript for you to copy&paste. Voilà!
